DESIGN FOR JOY
Making art is playful. It also requires work and science.
Creating a new piece can be very scientific, with a method and procedure on one day - and then the next day it is a wild, free experiment. Sometimes it makes you cry, and paint over six hours of work with white gesso. Other times you feel like the owner of a great secret, that you just painted an epic masterpiece today and no one knows yet, but then tomorrow you hate it. Being an artist is really a serious trip.
I feel compelled to always create. I think I am addicted to this rollercoaster of art-making.
Sometimes surface design is just not passionate enough for me. I always want my art to say something profound about the human condition. But then I realize that surface design takes little pieces and repeats them again and again until finally we notice -
Life is made of many small pieces of ordinary that when seen together make a unique and extraordinary design.
